John Chadwick is top centre of this image. I would presume that the other people in this photo are his brothers.
Estimated Year: 1910-11
John and his family lived at 43 Carlton Terrace, Brynn, Nr Wigan
What a fine upstanding bunch of lads. Hair and clothes immaculate, boots polished. A credit to their parents.
Shame these lads would be sent to the front a few years later!
Great pic.
A gradely crew!
I see the sportsman sat bolt upright on his chair, the form master on the extreme right of the back row, the lad whom 'they all looked out for' sat by himself on the front row, … .
Leigh, any more info on John and we'll see if we can name his brothers. (DoB, when he died, wife's name etc)
Hi Bob,
I can only find evidence of 3 brothers for John. The census reports suggest that his mother had more children, but are listed as children who are deceased. This may suggest that some of the people are not his kin, or perhaps related to someone else closely.
His confirmed brothers are: -
Arthur William Chadwick (1879)
Thomas Chadwick (1885)
George Herbert Chadwick (1900)
He also had two sisters: -
Margaret Chadwick (1883)
Esther Chadwick (1896)
Their parents were Mary Hughes (1862) and George Chadwick (1860).
John died in 1934. If my research is correct, I believe his death is attributed as drowning in the canal. I can only presume this is the Liverpool-Leeds Canal.
The gentleman on the front row in the middle is the only one who, in my opinion, displays a resemblance to John. His youthful look suggests that he 'could' George Herbert Chadwick, but I'm only guessing.
My grandad was Thomas Chadwick from Bryn. He was married to my nana Alice Chadwick My dad was also Thomas Chadwick and married to Alice nee Walker from Bryn. Grandad & nana live at 352 Wigan road Bryn. Do you think they are the same family? .we also lived at 352 when I was a child and my brother Brian was born in the house. My nanas family were Lomax's.
Hi Pamela. I have just seen your comment right now. Yep! Do you have a picture of your grandfather, Thomas? He was a few years older than my great-grandfather. Died in 1959?
