I remember Gladys well, she lived in Holt St worsleymesnes menses.
I remember her very well , I too lived in holt street !!
I remember another lady in Scholes, that carried out the bygone business of "Knocking Up". One morning, late fifties, at more, or less the completion of night duty. I came across a heated argument, in one the side streets leading up to St Patrick's Church. The lady knocker up used a hammer, and in doing so she had knocked the door panel out. To add insult to injury, she was at the wrong house.
Reading about the knocker-uper,made me think does anyone remember the lamp lighter? He used to travel around on a push bike lighting the street lights. We children would play for hours under the light until we were ordered in for bedtime. It wouldnt happen now.
Lesley, used to wait for the Lamp Lighter coming along Ainscow St in Spring View .
Jimmy, that would be old Mr Jones, Colin Birket's granddad. He lived at the bottom of Henry Street. He started doing the job, just after the war had ended.
No Xbox or play stations in them days 😀😁. Must of been boring if all you had do was wait for lamp lighter.
Sean. After five years of darkness, no way was it boring, it was a novelty.
