Bridget Theresa Davies (nee Rylands) 1852 - 1931 wife of John Davies, this picture was taken outside 223 Liverpool Road Hindley. Bridget was the local midwife, her record book of all the births she attended can be found in Leigh Archives.

Another great photo Alan. What a great asset she would have been to the community, no maternity hospitals in those days.

She looks a very formidable lady, neighbourhoods are worse off for the lack of people like her nowadays.

A.W............Why?

David, I think what DW means is ladies like Bridget were pillars of the community, Children respected them, adults would go to them for help and advice. Bridget would would attend the home birth of babies day or night often without any payment and would help the families whichever way she could over the coming weeks. No NHS those days.

David, once upon a time people knew each other and helped their neighbours, nowadays nobody seems to care much.

A.W. It is a far different world that we live in today, compared to the world we were born into.
