Looks like Christopher Park where Latics now train.
looks like ashfield park to me.
Definately Ashfield, the lower of the 2 football pitches between Wigan Road and the woods, which you can see on the right. We knew this part of Ashfield as the Hockey Nets as there were conctrete courts for hockey/netball which the local schools used in years gone by. Also visible in the photo are the old changing rooms and if you look closely, to the right of these, the old WW2 airaid shelter. Think that disapeared when the area was revamped and the childrens play area and carparks put in. Happy times
I used to play football on there in the 70's for school. I remember the old changing rooms...
Certainly not Christopher Park as there were no trees that size round the pitches.
Through the woods to the right, below Ashfield House were swings, a roundabout, a rather large slide and what was known as the Long Tom, a long swing that went side to side instead of backwards and forwards. There was also a tennis court with a clay surface. Then there was the front and rear lawns to Ashfield House which were brilliant for the weekly FA Cup finals. The lawns were like snooker tables.
And don't forget the apple orchard Standisher at the side of the old ambulance station within the grounds of Ashfield house/park ,bet you raided it a time or two when you were a lad as most lads did or not ?
We certainly did. I seem to remember a few pear trees near the front lawns that we had the pleasure of harvesting. Just around the corner from here, early seventies, my mate was up one of the many conker trees right at the top on the small branches ( funny how all the biggest conkers were always at the top ) when the branch snapped and he fell about 40 feet to the ground. Only broke his ankle. Very lucky !!
I have a picture of Long Tom and I'm about to upload it.
Is that Sped Meadwell in the red shirt in front of Alan Hatton?
Orange shirt nearest the ball could be Trevor Syner
