What a nice clear photo of a good looking couple Keith
IF this is James and his wife Ellen then they married on December 20th 1922 at St Elizabeth of Hungary, Aspull. James was a 29 year old Brakesman on the Corporation Tramways (his father had been a Motor Man) and Ellen was a 23 year old Hosiery knitter living at Woodfield Street, Aspull whereas James lived at 29 Clarington Grove, which I remember as my grandmother’s home.
I have been doing family research and my great grandfather was Charles Gorry who came from Kells in Ireland and lived at Dukes Row Aspull The spelling is different though -- I just wondered if your Gorries originated from Ireland
Hi Kathy, the lineage of this Gorrie family stems from Fife in Scotland and my mother's grandfather James Gorrie b.1854 in Colinsburgh near the Balcarres Estate (the Lindsay family).
This is how my maternal family links have been made - it's a long story but it's all connected to the Estate Manager of the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres's Estate at Haigh, in Wigan, marrying my mother's great grandmother (b.1834 Colinsburgh, Fife - they lived at Ashfield House in Standish for a number of years). Her father (b.1800) was also the Estate manager for the Lindsay family at the Earl’s Balcarres’s Estate in Fife for 50 years. Estate Managers are referred to as "Factors" in Scotland.
Thank you Keith obviously not the same family I enjoy doing family research and I am looking for any clues to get me further back on the Gorry side as I can only get as far as Charles' father Cornelius who is my 2x great grandfather
Thanks Kathy - the name Gorrie is a double edged sword as far as family research is concerned - I've found only one family in Wigan with this spelling so research in this area is very straightforward - unfortunately there are often many different spellings in the records and so there are problems, especially since my great grandmother (Ann Gorrie nee Jones) had some 14 children, one of whom, Alexander Gorrie was born at Ashfield House. Good luck with your research.
