The soldier in the photograph looks very much like L.Cpl. Thomas Woodcock V.C. of the Irish Guards, a Wigan hero of the Great War.
He returned to his home town for a Civic Reception in March 1918, and only a short time afterwards, was killed in action, after returning to the front.

It is indeed Thomas Woodcock V.C. with his wife and three children. The family home was in Teck Street. Having been awarded his V.C., he was entitled not to return to the front, but volunteered to do so, saying that he was 'Going back to do a bit more for the King'. A few weeks later, he was killed in action in France. A true Wigan hero.
