Just found my dads soldiers service book, it says he enlisted in Wigan, but where would he have done that? Where did you go in 1946 to enlist as a soldier?

Your dad would probably have enlisted at the Drill Hall in Powell St.

Thank you Michael. Can anyone tell me anything about the Drill Hall? I have photos of my dad and my grandad in uniform and would like help in identifying the places that they went and also their colleagues in the photos, and the uniforms

Susan. The Drill Hall was in Greenough Street,, a street that led down to St George's Church, separated the Drill Hall, from Santus, bus body building factory, about fifty yards from the junction with Standishgate.

The Drill Hall (demolished in 1986) was NOT in Greenough St. It was in Powell St, diagonally opposite St John's Presbytery (still standing). Greenough St was a direct continuation of Powell St. These days the two streets are separated by Central Park Way.

For pictures of the Drill Hall, go to Album: Places: Drill Hall, Powell Street, Wigan.

Michael. I did realize my mistake, after I had forwarded my comments,as you stated the Drill Hall was in Powell Street. I did rectify my mistake, but when I sent the correction, I did not put my name in the box, therefore it was entered

Thank you so very much Michael and Albert. Just looked at the Drill Hall photos, amazing. Is there anyway of identifying a uniform and which regiment people belonged to? I have lots of photos of my dad and grandad in uniform, and also in Palestine, and other places I don't know
