My cousin Enid Barton, sitting left of the teacher/headmistress? Daughter of Charles & Elizabeth Barton of Upholland, her mother was a Bradshaw. Photo must have been taken around the 1940's but I'm just guessing that. Enid was a pupil at Upholland Grammar School, the writing on the back of the pic says she was in Form 6A. Enid went on to be a teacher herself
& married Harold Ashall who was headmaster at Holland Moor Junior School. The pic is obviously cut from a larger school photo.

I think the teacher is Miss Penman. She was the science mistress when I was there from 1951 to 1956. You are probably right about the date of the photo Helen, and it looks as though it has been cut from one of those panoramic photos which captured the whole school. We had to keep still for ages while the camera panned round. Happy days!

Yes Helen,That is Miss Penman, who was my first science teacher at UGS. She was quite a character, who chain-smoked and suffered from stomach ulcers,so also popped antacids throughout her classes."My name is Penman--P E N M A N " was her method of introducing herself to new students. As discipline, she would make us memorise a psalm!!

Thanks for the memories of UGS...they don't make teachers like that anymore !

They certainly don't.Almost all of the teachers I remember with a great deal of fondness. They were mostly very special, and great teachers to boot.
