years old). We think the photo was taken in Paris in 1918. He enlisted
14th January 1918 and served with the Lancashire Fusiliers - Manchester
Regiment in the fighting around Arras and Ypres.
i think my great granddad thomas brown from ince was with the same regiment along with his best mate joe ralph
How very young he seems to be.--Not too young to risk his life for his country, though.I can hardly imagine many of today's eighteen year olds making the same heroic gesture spontaneously!!
According to his Service Record he embarked to France in 16 August 1918 having transferred from the Manchester's to the 2/4th Yorks and Lancaster Regiment as a Private. So I doubt the photo was taken in Paris!
George is my father.I have been unable to track his service record. Where would I find it? You have just added another peice of the jigsaw about Dad. Thanks
Robin, You are my second cousin once removed. (My grandfather, John Bertram Deakin was a first cousin of George Melbourne -- BTW, whence the "Melbourne"? My home town is Melbourne although I live in Sydney.) When/where did he die? Waht was your mother's maiden name and dates? Do you have any siblings? children? Names? Dates? I was christened in Wigan in October 1951 aged 5, on a trip to see my mother's family, the Deakins.
