This is a photo of my Grandma and Grandad. It is possible that it was taken on Viaducts row although I have a tendency to think it would have been in Belle Green Lane. The date would be around mid to late 30s. I think that these are definitely his best clogs - Sunday clogs? Did people have a best pair of clogs? My Grandad kept his pit clogs under the sink in the back and they were a black and battered pair with heavy irons so we had a job to even pick them up. These fancy fawn-coloured clogs definitely weren't his pit clogs.
This photo is as battered as the clogs but a second bit of interest may be that it is a composite of two pics. An early photoshop or trick photography as it was then called. This is the same single chair and background and the negatives were cut and joined to put the two people together on a single print. My Grandma died young, in childbirth, and photos of the two of them together are rare. I think that this is why it was done.

An interesting account but very sad. Can we have the rest of the story?

great photo, just a comment on the clogs, my uncle was a clog maker and the one's being shown are very much work quality. Sunday best were made from much softer leather with laces and often had a brass toe cap.The work grade leather was so hard wearing that often clogs came in to have new bottoms and irons with the leather still going strong.

dk' your Grandma died 12 days after giving birth to Marjorie.
Uncle Harold never forgave Billinge Hospital for not lettin'
him go to her bedside to see her.
He was only allowed to see her from top of the ward.
Matron ruled their roost in them days.
