The first photo taken of my Mother & Father when they reached India, about the end of November 1931, the voyage took 6 weeks to Bombay (Mumbai) & then they had to travel up country by train to Cawnpore (Kanpur) Must have been a bit of an eye opener for a 25/23 year old couple who had never been further than Manchester before.

Fabulous photo Helen, oh yes imagine the sounds, the colours, the noises and smells to get used to.
Civil Service or Commercial? what a leap in to the unknown eh?

Thanks Fert. You never imagine your parents as being young & adventurous !
My Dad went to India as an assistant weaving manager. He stayed there till 1952 to oversee the handing over of the mill to the Indians after independence...the mill is no more, you can see the outline of the foundations on Google Earth. The bungalow we lived in is still there after all these years.
