The line was used for quite a while after the station closed as access to the Shell Oil Refinery

Ashton in Makerfield station was actually in HAYDOCK.

What a great looking station, it looks straight out of the railway children. What ashame this station had to go, along with so many other railways in Wigan and elsewhere. And what do we have in its place? a boring business park full of emptiness and greedy businesses. We sorely needs these stations back, far too many cars and big lorries on our roads.
