I just to go to this market with my aunt and uncle when we visited them in the 1960s. I also went back in the 1970s, 80s ... enjoyed the treacle toffee! None like it anywhere!

In the fifties my mum used to buy sweets here, and enormous thick bars of milk chocolate, they were supposed to come from Belgium, also chocolate covered wafer biscuits. After a day or two the chocolate would fall off, still got scoffed though.

In the 60s you could get everything on Ashton market.Does anybody remember the biscuit stall with open boxes you just asked for a pound (or two if you were flushed) of mixed biscuits. We got everything on the market. Clothes, and material to make clothes for us less well off.Now there are just cheap chain stores, instead of cheap markets!

I wish it still had all the nostalgic cobbles instead of the ugly smearing of tarmac.

When I was little, going to Ashton market was always a routine thing with my mum when shopping. I always remember kids clothing like socks and vests that were sold from a van (or whatever you call them) ran by two middle-aged women (their names escape me). Does anyone remember them? I think the last I saw them there was in the mid 90s.

The market back in the sixtys sold everything you could need pet stalls, foods, clothes,as I said everything There was a biscuit stall. You bought biscuits loose by the lb(pound)you could get broken ones cheaper. It was a thriving place busy Tues & Sat,sadly times change and anyway you can get lots of your supplies in any supermarket! They try to revive markets but people want to shop in the warmth and comfort of Arcades etc! Times They are a Changing:)
