Market Place, not street!

Comment by: Peter W. on 25th August 2012 at 00:45

This is Market Street, the shops and other properties across the road opposite the Black Bull, had their address as, Rectory Lane.

Comment by: Roy Huxley on 27th September 2012 at 09:23

Peter sorry to disagree but this is Market Place, i lived in Market St around the corner from here, it plainly states Market Place on the front wall of the Black Bull.

Comment by: Roy Huxley on 27th September 2012 at 09:28

Peter the shops and houses opposite the Black Bull were and are in Market St. Market St ends and Rectory Lane begins opposite the top of Bradley Lane.

That part is Market St Bert,it went to no 25 then the Black Bull but then it becomes Market Place i lived at 19 Garlands Flower shop now.

The building in front of the cross was formerly a pub called the Eagle & Child. My grandfathers brother Mathias Speakman was the landlord in the early 1900s.

Any idea of the date of this photograph?

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 17th December 2023 at 09:33

According to Google Maps, that building, now a private residence is 39 Market Place which I knew it was all along.
If you like I can knock on the door and ask?
That curved stone wall at the side of the Black Bull is still there, at the back it looks like there was a small street off Pole Street with houses and possibly a shop where the Standish Centre now is.

Colin, you are right with the address and that fact that it is now a private residence. I remember it being a butcher's and completely open (no fence) as it is on the photograph.

Possibly, Colin, the road/driveway to The Unity Club was once a street. There is definitely a shop behind the old building with the name Worthington and there are houses on each side of the shop, which gives us the impression that this is a street.
Additionally, there were obviously some serious changes made in one of the decades around the mid-1900's, because the shops approximately opposite Standish Library aren't of the same period as the terraced houses around them. Possibly, a lot of building work went on in Standish in the 1960's and 1970's. There are far more modern buildings (shops) inbetween the old buildings.
Also, that shop and houses don't look far enough away to be the main road. Therefore, I would agree with what you said, Colin. I think that there used to be a street there.

Sorry Colin, It's my house. I can confirm that it is 39 Market Street. This is despite the sign confirming Market Place.

It causes no end of confusion for delivery drivers.

Dear Owner, thank you for the clarification, being on Market Place that is indeed confusing, I walk past nearly every day and always admire it and its history.
I know your property recently changed hands after the land at the back was sold to build those four new houses on Pole Street. they do look pleasant enough and don't look out of place.
Nice to see the picture up again.

Correction: Four Houses on Cross Street!!!
