The Colliers is not one of my watering holes although I'm sure it's a dear place in the hearts of many in New Springs. I have visited it only three times and on each occasion wasn't allowed to leave on the same day as I had entered. I think it was some kind of rule.
The van you see parked outside the Colliers, belonged to Jimmy McNulty senior - he worked as a rep for many years for Ashton's Wholesale Tobacconists. Jim's wife Barbara once told me that apart from 3 short periods since it was built in 170l that it had been in her family until I think sometime in the 1970's or 80's. I went to Holy Family School, with their younger son Tony, he was just a bit older than me. When I was in my late teens I used to drink in there sometimes.
Just browsing through and saw the picture of the pub Used to know Tony McNulty from the sixties and he was from New Springs.Used to go to Spiders Web at Haydock Anybody know him?
Went to same school with Tony Holy Family School/Church also the late Johnny Kearns Sheila Broomehead the late Pat Sherriff and Margaret lundy[Phil Clarks Mum]this is about late forty.s early fifty.s teachers Mrs Graham Mrs Swindlehurst Mrs Allen cant remember the headteacher name
My uncle Jim Mcnulty and Barbara were landlords of the Colliers arms.We used to visit the family on our trips to see the Wigan side of the family. If the van parked at the side of the pub was Jims I have had several rides in it with my uncle to collect tobacco from the wholesale supplier.
I went to Holy family the headmasters name in the fifties was mr Yates I think
We used to have some great nights in The Colliers,my Aunt Kathleen Malloy used to play the washboard I think or maybe the spoons, lots of singing and music.
Any one know what happened to Tony McNulty ?
Overlooking Jack Marsdens farm, just left on the photo.
just been announced it is up for sale sad, good luck to former owners.
Mr Yates was headmaster at st John's for years
Just a few comments. Margaret Lundy was married to Colin Clarke, ex Wigan player. Mr Yates was head of St Johns school, not Holy family and it was Bob Marsdens farm at the time of the picture. I lived near them. Not being picky just assuring to know some have senior moments like me and forget things at times. ????
