This slide was taken from a point tight in to the farmer's fields with the Hemfield Road slag heap behind, or perhaps a bit in front and all around by the looks of things, and the delph and Bank Houses away to the right.
I think it's pretty early 1950s and we used to play all over this derelict land in the 1960s. There was a big rock stuck up by the main path, perhaps the one to the far left foreground, that was called the frog rock or bullet rock by some. It was a couple of hundred yards further up than the black tank. We used to scrawp around in the dirt and dig up the front ends of rifle bullets - where on earth did they come from? I once found one in the clay bank of the brook running into the delph near the golf links.
It looks like there were further rearrangements to the landscape in general before our bullet rock days as I don't remember it being as rough as this.
The picture is aimed at Withington Lane with the Wutchey rugged and near mountaineous, it seems, dominating the view and Rivington Pike just barely visible in the distance.

We used to go to the slag tip from the top of Hindley and somewhere near Baron's woodyard there was a place we called the bullet dump and the bits we found we put on the end of our arrows for use with our home made bows.
There were what seemed to be old army type vehicles that were left to rot in the old NCB salesyard at the top of Ladies Lane.
I was born here & used to play here in 50's & early 60's. Don't remember it being this messy. Golf course No9 green was across from our house & fairway used to run down-hill to Delph & over a narrow dirt road to remainder of golf course.
