Photograph taken in 1898 just before Library Street was opened up. The premises of Atherton and Gould and Daniel Barlow, (Nos 1 and 3 Market Place respectively) were about to be demolished to make way for it. Notices in the latter's window refer to a closing down sale. The Manchester and County Bank (no.5) and Coop's shop( Nos 1 and 3 Wallgate) remained.

The building on the left is now the 'Moon over the Water' The doorway, and bay window, on the second floor, are still exactly the same today.

That's excellent Ron.
Your explanation makes it all the better.

Is that a Chinaman in the foreground? I'm not trying to be funny or clever, certainly the Chinese played a huge part in the early history here in Australia, both on the mainland, and in the island state of Tasmania, as well as in the U.S.A. and other countries around the world at that time. They worked hard and helped shape and build these countries with their culture and ethic for hard work, they were instrumental in progressing the societies of all these countries and were amazing business people in all enterprises in which they engaged. Their contribution is well-documented and represented in early history of these places.

Ron, The door to the left and the window above are now as you say Moon Under The Water. The door below and the window above are today exactly the same.
When the extension to the side into what would be Library Street in a sympathetic style must have cost a pretty penny in those days.
I always wondered what that area looked like before Library Street was built.

This reminds me of the film ‘Gangs of New York’
