This photo was a colour photo I’ve “refreshed”. First posted by Nev Buchanan some dozen years ago. I ventured in to the Park Hotel with my Art College friend, over 60 years ago, to sample their freshly made cheese and pickle sandwiches, we were not disappointed. The landlord Tom Brown, a Wigan Director, had travelled down to South Wales in 1938 with others to sign my father for the Wigan Club. Indirectly he was partly responsible for me being a Wiganer.

Closed March 1985.
Sadly missed.

I never went inside The Park Hotel but remember the outside, and the "mock-up" of it at the Wigan Pier "Way We Were" museum, where some of the actual fittings from the original pub were displayed, with mannequins dressed in Victorian/Edwardian clothes portraying staff and customers.

I only went in a few times in the early 1970’s, not my cup of tea but an another sad loss of a fine building.
I noticed this week that there is scaffolding up on the former Market Hotel and it is being reroofed so there is hope it might get a reprieve from the proposed demolition.
Great story by the way Keith.

I often wondered where the door on the left went to? It was always boarded up as far as I remember? I can only think it was a passageway to the rear of the building? Only at Christmas time, they sold BARLEY WINE It came in small bottles.. Mixed with Guinness. It would blow your head off<g>

Ron, I love Barley Wine and you can still get it in small cans in Morrison's but it's expensive for the size of the cans. It's not as strong as it used to be either. I remember the little bottles well.

I remember going to the Folk Club, I think Monday evenings, after night school. It was held in one of the upstairs rooms. That would have been mid 60's I think. Also remember the mock-up in the Museum.
