Just 40 years ago now - gone as if in a puff of smoke. If I’m honest I quite liked the Galleries…they added a lot to the shopping experience. They went down hill after the
‘Grand’ Arcade.

I agree , Veronica.....I liked The Galleries too. I missed the old Market Hall but the new one was quite similar at the beginning before high rents forced stallholders out. I was nearly 40 when I started work at Boots in 1992 and it was lovely, in my dinner break, going round the Market Stalls outside, which back then DID have the striped awnings shown in the drawings, and lovely hanging baskets hung on the outside walls. I never imagined it would only last for 30 years. What a waste!
