The houses with gardens at the front I remember. There were stone steps coming down from the street above onto a cobbled path at the side of the Douglas. We would walk past them to go to the woods. I can’t remember the other building on the other side of Greenough St. I bet TomWalsh will know or Derek B.
the pub on the right was princes of wales. the houses on the left where on the side of the dougi next to st. georges school play ground the picture was taken about 1960 because you can just see the new flats in lime st. where i lived . about one inch from top right hand corner. you can also see calderbanks scrapyard about 2 inches to the left of the pub,
As you entered Orchard St. from Greenough St., immediately on the left there used to be a one pump petrol station, which was operated manually by the attendant. Veronica, I well remember the houses you refer to but have no idea what they were named. I went to St. Georges school with a lad who lived in one of them but, unfortunately, can't remember his name.
not sure but i think the houses were called douglas terrace
I think Angela and Garry Shannon lived in the houses on the left, they went to St Marys.
I wonder who they were built for ? They didn't match the rest of the houses around that area. More Wigan Lane area?? I was thinking that may have been built by some company, for their managers? I would think the rent was probably more than double than the other houses in that area, at that time.
There is a street map of the area in the Places section on the site, titled WATER HEYES
The circle of the right, where the pub was, is now where the Retirement flats are, right next to the Oak hotel.
I loved at 9 waterheyes terrace with my brother Stephen and sister Carole mum Mary dad billy
Barton family in the middle cottage
Janet, am I correct in remembering Were there a couple of steps up from the river side pathway, up to the houses. Which had long gardens?? I was always intrigued as to these houses. They just didn't fit in with the terraced houses all around them. Have you any photographs or history of them?
