As I was a junior engineer during the M6 construction father drove me to work parking up on Gathurst Viaduct and took this photograph on his camera. Note the steam train heading for Wigan. 61 years later what is the view now?
Thats a great photo Barrie with the completed car. Was this before or after Blaymires truck hit the Horseshoe ?. Also, I notice the car seems to be facing Standish on the wrong side of the road. It's a good job the M6 was still under construction as your Father might have had a bit of explaining to do :)
My old old friend Phil Miles worked on the Gathurst viaduct
WN1, this was after the car had been repaired up in Preston from the wagon accident. As I was based at Spring Road Kitt Green site offices and due to the M6 opening day being close the team was working 7 days to have it ready. No buses ran from Standish to Orrell early mornings so I cleared it with my boss for us to travel in the car. The southbound carriageway was being worked on hence we travelled South on the northbound carriageway. Over a 4 week spell on a Sunday the car was allowed to transport me to work and on the last trip we travelled down to the Thelwall Viaduct and back to Wigan South junction where he dropped me off and rejoined the A49.
