Alwyn bottom left, can't remember the other girls names but remembers Bob, he was a dispatcher.
I remember those days when the assistants always looked smart in black.
Don't they look a nice bunch of girls, happy in their work....and Bob looking on them with his fatherly smile.
Lovely photo, and Alwyn and the other girls look so naturally pretty.....no false nails, false eyelashes or tattoos for them! I wish there were some photos of the inside of the store back then. When I worked there in 1973-1976, (Debenhams), the staff entrance was still on Crompton Street and we had to "clock in". During the three years I worked there, they removed the old clock system, (perhaps it had broken down), and we had to then sign in, but I'm glad I experienced the old system.
It was a ‘feather in your cap’ working at Debenhams in those days. It was one of my aspirations when I left school ….I ended up in Aspinall’s Decorators
instead! ( not for long though!)
I worked there for my Saturday job when I was at school, until I left school to work full-time.I can remember clocking- on,and earning the princely sum of £1 for all day,9am to 6pm( with 3d deducted for contributions !)
