I remember so well when Lowe's Department Store stood in that spot. It was very much like "Grace Brothers' Store" from the tv series, "Are You Being Served?".....all creaky staircases and carpeted floors and a hushed atmosphere. A friend of mine started work there as a young lad in the carpet dept. and told me there was a resident ghost! We had Lowe's, Pendlebury's, British Home Stores, Oxley's and Marks and Spencer's department stores back then, and now we have none. Progress?....I don't think so! But a good photo, Ron, of our lovely, unchanging Parish Church.
I had my photograph taken with Father Christmas in that building to the left Ron… … not recently you understand …
It was a while ago .
Forgot to mention the photo gives a good view of the "White Lion" Which was from the front of the pub of that name, that was on that spot.
Loved going into Lowe's for a pot of tea or coffee and a toasted teacake with workmates when we had finished work on Saturdays(in the days when banks closed early.)It always seemed the height of luxury.x
Remember when department store lifts had a lift operator who sat on a stools and pressed the lift buttons for the customers
I have operated the lift at Debenhams, Sue S, when the lift attendant was off sick. It was a bit like Grace Brothers...."Ground floor perfumery, stationery and leather good.....going u-up!" Ozy, you need to put that photo on when you were with Father Christmas....we want to see it!
The photo is already on under Lowes Irene you wouldn’t believe what a sweet little boy he was. I am sure you have seen it. Butter would definitely not have melted. Along with the photo is a very long discussion. Take a look! I’ll try to find the item number.
Item number 27097.
Just look at Ozy the little Angel.
You’ve already seen it Irene and according to information recently received , so have half the British ex-pats currently residing on the Costa del Sol .
Does that include the
Jolly Swagman Ozy because I was informed he had taken a photo of me which made me a bit dis- gruntled.
Good photo Ron. Could you see anything of the Fleece Yard from there because that is the last corner not demolished completely.
Ground floor - perfumery,
stationery and leather goods,
wigs and haberdashery,
kitchenware and food -
Going up .......
Peter I couldn't get any higher This photo was taken from the topmost window in the cupola.
