Lovely photo of you and the good doctor Irene. And wearing THAT dress! Although it’s not held together with pins.

Very smart.

I know this photo isn't all that old, but the clothes are! Peter's suit once belonged to (ahem!), Sir Peter Hilton, the Lord Lieutenant of Derby and is a ton weight! My fur is from the 1930s and my pink dress was home-made by some clever lady in the 1940s. It has a side-fastening just by my left elbow which is fastened by press-studs as you can see on the photo. The night before the event I found that a press-stud was missing and the dress gaped open. Well!.....try to get a press-stud in Abram on a Saturday night....no chance! My neighbour, who sews, was on holiday and I had a key to her house so I went in , (I knew she wouldn't mind), and managed to find a press-stud! Phew! Next day, Peter and I won a prize at Haigh Hall for our outfits and my prize was.....wait for it,,,,,a sewing-tin containing press-studs! (You couldn't make it up....LOL! ).

So stylish Irene, love the hat !

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 7th March 2024 at 08:22

Thankyou everyone. Helen, I made the hat out of an old trilby hat of Peter's.

They are certainly dressed for the part, very smart indeed.

Well done Peter and Irene.
It could well be Gary and Phoebe Sparrow on a night out in the town

Thankyou Garry and Colin. I just wish there were more forties events near home. We always seem to have to travel quite a long way, The Haigh Hall one was really handy. Heskin Hall held one last year but we couldn't make it, unfortunately, due to a family wedding.

I know its too far to travel Irene but just to say we have fabulous 40's weekend here in Sheringham every September...the whole town takes part, you would love it !

Thankyou Cyril. We've actually got the same "Player's Navy Cut" pub mirror over our fireplace that is in the pub in Goodnight Sweetheart.

I used to go shopping in town with my Mam every Saturday,we'd head for the hat area in British Home Stores ..I just loved trying all the hats on and being egged on by my Mam..I really don't know how I got away with it the more I think about now,I must have tried every hat on......on my birthday this year my son took me to tea on Lords St Southport and as we were having a toot at goods on Lord St later guess what I saw and my son bought it for me...I wish they'd come back into fashion.
