I wonder what that young lad’s job was. He only looks about 12. Perhaps he fetched and carried and ran errands. Probably brewed up and if he wasn’t up to scratch got a flea in his ear or even a thick ear! He looks very serious.

He probably was a telegraph messenger, passing messages from the telegraph room to senior station staff as Wigan LNWR was a large station.

Thanks for posting this. The gentleman on the left of the back row, with the large moustache, is my great grandfather Robert Yates Halsall.
