I was lucky then....on trips up there, my Dad used to tell me that the shimmering in the far distance was the sea at Southport...was it ?

It probably was, Helen.....you can certainly see as far as Southport on a clear day from Parbold Hill, and even the Tower and the shape of the "Big One" ride at Blackpool! I imagine on a very sunny day you might have seen the sea, but the conditions would have to be just right. There is a house in Haigh called "Sea View" so who knows??!

I have not been up there for years, it was particularly popular at one time on Good Friday, the views were lovely. I was up there the day I met my wife of fifty years!
I bet much of that land around is now shrouded in trees and that both the Beacon and Prince William are closed?

I used to walk up there from Up Holland and it was one of my favourite places. On a good day you can see the sea, the mouth of the Mersey, Liverpool, and beyond the mountains in Wales. I live in the USA now and haven't been back to Up Holland since 2015. When I visit I always go to what we used to call "The Beacon".

Thanks for this website, I visit it weekly to revive memories of what I still call home.
