That looks set up like one of those washhouse rooms that were off or next to kitchens in houses at one time, (only on a ship) where there was a copper to boil water for washing of clothes etc., and would be done in a dolly tub, though there isn't a grate in the brick wall where the fire would be, but would they have had a fire to boil water on a wooden sailing ship, but what else would the chopped wood be for?
The cane leaning against the cupboard looks like one of them cane beaters that you'd beat rugs and runners with when hung on a clothes line to get the dust out of them, though it looks to be a lot thinner than the ones I remember.
Veronica B, are those Miles Standish's underpants I see out to dry?
You can bet they all “stank to man’s height” even though they were surrounded with water. .
