Following on from the previous Sledge photo in the Plantations, my parents and the 2 sisters are out the following day with the sledge. From Wrightington St.-Coppull Lane-Plantations-Boat House and along the canal bank -Sennicar Lane-Brock Mill Lane-Leyland Mill Lane-Milton Grove-Mesnes Road and home. I guess Father was tired when he got back to the house. Mum took this photo coming down from the canal in deep snow. According to his diary, there was 6 consecutive days of snow falling then a thaw.

Barrie, we lived in Pendleburys cottages next to the canal bridge on Pendlebury Lane, one bridge up from Sennicar lane in 1947 and that year we had deep snow. We were cut off and a man died trying to get through to Brockmill. I was told he slid under a snowdrift near the
railway arches. My mother told me that they payed rent to the Coal Board and wasn't she pleased when a barge came and delivered some coal. There were no services there, they only had oil lamps and coal fires all the year round. Your photo brought back the memories, even though a different year.

Peter & anyone else interested, New Years Day -Channel 5 @ 9pm there is a programme about the 1947 winter snow and how it affected the UK.
According to the diary, the bad weather was from Jan- March with thaws in between and very cold.
