My father said that he and his mates if they heard of the fights and got there first, would watch out for bobbies and the men would pay them a few pennies for doing so, I suppose those men would have been the ones organising the bets on the the clog fighters, and he did say that later some of the clog fighting men would be being half carried, half dragged off the fields with blood dripping down their feet from their legs. He also said there would be bare knuckle fights held on Platt Lane fields too.

Another great photo by Arnold Hall from the Wigan Observer.

I see the great Arnold Hall was a reporter too as well as a fantastic photographer.

I can't work out where the photo was taken from?? St Catherine's church looks a distance away. So probably more towards Ince?

Ron it looks a distance away but it's not really. Just off the photo towards were the ladies are walking, is the railway bridge that the trains run along Whelley loop line.I can see the street were my husband was born. Its a housing estate now.The cooling towers in the background as well.
