THANKS DAVID FOR THE INFO. I WONDER WHERE HE WAS BURIED? MAYBE WINNIE CAN FIND OUT IF HE MARRIED AND HAD ANY CHILDREN?

I thought the story rang a bell - so I looked, and found that there's another pic from that occasion already in the Album: # 14201

If I've worked things out correctly, one of this gentleman's daughters, Mary (born 1930), had a little grocers shop at the bottom of Alma Hill UpHolland, for many years.
It was always known as 'Mary Lee's' even though her married surname was Winstanley.
I think her father Edward Stanley Lee lived on Alma Hill until his death, and is probably buried in UpHolland churchyard.

Does anyone know where the photo was taken? I'm old enough that I went to the old infant school on Alma Hill before it was demolished in the 1960's, as well as the old junior school. The room looks vaguely familiar in shape. We lived in Hall Green and I remember a shop at the bottom of Alma Hill that we would pop into, the name Mary's sounds familiar too. It was amazing what you could get with a threepenny bit in the days when a Penny Arrow cost an old penny.

Graham Heyes - pic was taken in the old village school on Church Street.
(I've seen this pic elsewhere with the location identified.)
In the 1960s when I attended this school, there were sliding wood and glass partitions dividing the room into three classrooms. I remember these being pulled back on a couple of occasions to make one big room as seen in the pic.

The blackboard at the back is seen more fully in the other image of this scene - and it says Upholland Village School above L/Cpl. Lee's details. The newspaper article in the reference I've given above says it was the Village Church School - with a pic of the Vicar, Lee, and the headteacher.
Ron - does your copy of this image have a clearer view of what is in the frame seen hanging down in the centre on the right? It looks as if it might be the School's Roll of Honour. Many Schools and Churches maintained these - often pre-printed sheets on which the names of men would be written in as they went off to war. If they were killed or wounded, this might also be recorded. Unfortunately, many of these were lost after the war - as permanent War Memorials were erected, and memories faded.

Tony L - I'm wondering if you were in my class? I was at that school in the 1960's too and there was someone in the class who's full name could be shortened to Tony L. I remember the partitions and sitting cross legged on the floor for assembly. I started school at the infant school on Alma hill, did one year there and they moved us up the hill to the new school. Then a year later we were moved back down the hill to the junior school, then a couple of years later back up the hill to the new junior school.

Graham Heyes - I think I was a few years before your time. I left the village school to go to secondary in 1964.

It looks very much like the old St Thomas's School on Church Street in UpHolland, the building still exists though was made into houses 30 years ago.
