DANIEL IS THIS THE CHURCH THAT WAS NEXT TO THE COURT CINEMA? IF IT IS, HAVE YOU GOT A PHOTO OF THE OUTSIDE?
Hi Ron, no it’s not the one next to the Court cinema, it’s across the road where the Solicitors are now which was the bank which later that purchased the building. There are some photos of the outside of this church. The one outside of the courts was a Methodist church, I think?
This church was near the TSB bank ( now Frank Platt & Fishwick solicitors) in King Street, when I first started work there in 1968.
If I remember correctly, after the fire the building was demolished and a Tesco store was built on the site, one to rival Lennon's which was the very first Supermarket in Wigan, I think that it was on the site of the old Hippodrome next to the TSB which previously had been the Shakespeare pub.
Yes that was correct Colin, there was a Tesco on King street but it was actually on the site of the Methodist Church more or less across the road from the Baptist. The Shakespeare was next to the Baptist church and was still standing for a bit after it was demolished, however they built Lennon’s next to where the Baptist church was. I don’t know what was on the site of the old Baptist church during that time however now both the site of the Shakespeare and the Baptist church is now where the Revolution bar is now.
