Looks derelict ?
Ron, I think the person who labelled this photo got the location wrong.
I have lived in the Abbey Lakes/School Lane area all my life (almost 70 years) and do not reacall a building like this.
There has never been one called Abbey Lakes House.
The building to the right of the house is clearly a church or similar building, and there are none like this in the area.
I dont remember a church at Abbey Lakes and it is not St Thomases
This is not Abbey Lakes, the building to the right of the house is clearly a church and there was never a church at Abbey Lakes.
I dont know where this is but its deffo nowhere round Abbey Lakes Orrell or UpHolland. I delivered all round there for years.
The church looking building is the Abbey
The Abbey ceased to exist 300 years before photography was invented .
Definitely not Abbey Lakes or anywhere near there.
Sad! I was intrigued by this one . Everyone knew what it wasn’t but not what it was . Then people started spouting off at each other (other picture ) and nothing was gained . I personally thought there was a photography error with the church but , not having that knowledge , I wasn’t sure . 1907 Ordnance Map shows buildings . Maybe this was the first after these where removed . Can anyone crack this one without a fight .
Could the church not be the back of St Thomas Church. The Abbey was part of the church and used to be to the right of the front entrance. Abbey lakes used to supply water to turn the water wheel for the Abbey corn mill which was in the dip close to Abbey lakes Hotel. It would have been close to the stream that is still here today that runs from the lakes through Dean Wood and into the River Douglas. I suspect the house in the picture disappeared over 100 years ago maybe.
