The car, I think, might be an Armstrong Siddeley. I remember it spending a lot of its time, parked at the back of the pub, off the road.
The Police phone box on the right is blocking the view to the Buffet side of the pub.
The off licence is situated in the middle and was often very busy in the early days, from February 1956 when the Wellfield Hotel, was opened.
Keith, the car is either a Daimler or a Lanchester. The Lanchester was marketed as a downmarket Daimler with a lower specification, but they basically shared the same body shell with some badge engineering on their radiators. The Lanchester name was dropped very shortly after the takeover by Daimler.
Use to play tick and pass on the car park.jack would come out and chase us off. Happy days
Much appreciate your car expertise Derek, thank you.
The photo was taken when I was 16 (not 13) but my respect for the magic of the negative and the resultant positive print has remained.
Eric, if my father had had any spare time, I’m sure he would have joined in. He was sports mad from his earliest days but the pub was a 24/7 operation.
Keith, jack was a top bloke,it was us lot who was out of order
Thank you Eric. His two great grandsons, aged 9 and 13 seem to be following in his footsteps to some extent and despite living in the Rugby League “wilderness” of the West Midlands, their favourite game is Rugby League even though they’ve only played it a couple of times. They are both big Wigan RL supporters with Jai Field their favourite player.
