No idea why they had to demolish those two shops/houses on the end of the Rushton Building, they had plenty of character and looked a lot more pleasant than the glass building that replaced them.
Mr X will be able to name all the cars and vans. Four car rows up there looks to be a bus inspector, do they still have them checking on buses?
I think it was Ashtons shop at the end.
I can make out Players Please on the window Colin, I can only remember them as being a Ladies Hairdressers and a Motor Insurance Office.
Too many vehicles to list here, all appear to be British with the possible exception of a Volkswagen Beetle. Notable cars include Ford Anglias of low and high spec, a very early Morris Minor with the lower mounted headlamps, a Ford Zodiac identified by its grille not be a cheaper Zephyr. Singers are more upmarket Hillmans with both Minxes and Gazelles. A Hillman Imp could be a Singer Chamois, and I think I can make out a three wheel Reliant Regal. There are also a few vans, and the Corporation bus maybe a long front entrance Massey bodied Leyland PD3, any one of EJP501-504, GJP8-10 17-19, HEK705-707, HJP1-4. There are no leaves on the trees so it will be a winter day.
Hi Mr X, I agree with your comments of the cars on Market Square,
I can name just about all of them. The Wigan Corporation double
deck bus is a 30ft Leyland PD3 with bodywork by Northern Counties,
and the single deck Ribble bus is a Leyland Royal Tiger with, I think
bodywork by Leyland Motors. Cheers, Ray.
In the early sixties I used to wait for the Leyland Motors works bus opposite Rushtons every morning at about 6.30.
