Before reading Ron's location description I imagined the photo to have been taken at the bottom of Coppull Lane, though many years ago as it was then very similar scenery - now there's a concrete dam.
Difficult to pin point this location . I'm thinking the canal could be on top of the slope to the right and the children between the cut and the rough of the golf course . The hall would then be hidden in the trees on the left .
Or maybe it's been taken beyond the hall a little further towards Adlington , the hall then being behind the camera to the right .
An idyllic feel to the picture wherever it is .
What's a picture of Bolton doing in Wigan Album?
James Hanson. The area has seemed sufficiently important to the Wigan Archaeological Society to investigate the area. The golf club has a WN1 postcode. Thank you Ron
Phillip you are wasting your time mate. The guy is a COMPLETE IDIOT. He is obsessed by what is and what is not, in Wigan.
I'm in Hindley and I go to Wigan occasionally.
Better than the words I’ve learned ,
Schooled and trained or merits earned ,
Can never match the simple truth ,
The spell of moments
in days of youth ,
When cast upon a Summer cloud ,
We reached to joy with cries out loud ,
To days that lingered on and on ,
when innocence and Nature ,
came cast as one ..
I'm with Cyril on this. It looks very similar to the "Scroggs" what used to be on the left hand side as you go down Coppull Lane.
You can see the dip where the River Douglas flows and also you can make out the path at the back of the photo which ran to the plantations between the River and the bottom end of Bottling Wood.
I agree Cyril my first thought this scene was at the bottom of Coppul Lane. Just how I remember it in those halcyon days of the 50's and early sixties.
I would go for Coppul Lane. I could be wrong but I don’t think the valley sides are as high in the Arley area
Definitely the Douglas Valley near Arley Hall Arley hall would be in the top right area but a few hundred yards back. I was over there last year and apart from more trees it hasn't changed much

No more needs to be added !
Slightly different topic but connected. I am often surprised at talking to people who don’t know the location of the 20 Bridges further down.

Thanks for sharing the photo Ron, even though affirmed to be Arley and not The Scroggs, it has brought back memories as to how idyllic the area off Coppull Lane once was.
