We could never pass this "Aladdins Cave" Ron.It was the car boot of yore.Always came out with some thing, if it was only a pen knife.Again lovely memories.
What sticks in my mind Edna is the rings they sold that were made of silver sixpences..
My Mam told me of chatting to a young man outside who went there looking for a violin,I've often wondered if he found one..I've heard so many tales of what people bought there including the Japanese uniform that's been mentioned so many times..it's hilarious.
Can anyone member what the other shops in the picture sold. I remember a cake shop but I think that was nearer to the Douglas bridge?
Ron,the cake shop near the bridge was McCandlishes then across the road was Norman
Leathers music shop, both Cliff and myself had a record made there.,there was the Collins Pet Shop ,further up past Kay's was a framing shop for painters ..across the road was Alan Rhodes paper shop who had curry for every meal, next door was the Post office..I think they were sisters in there..if I think of any more I will let you know.
Maureen. I remember McCandllshes very well and the sisters in the Post Office. Cross the road towards Warrington Lane just before the Pepper Mill was a very old fashioned herbalist. I also seem to recall that there was a very early Indian restaurant around the - the Koh i Noor ?
I think a similar picture was on a few years ago and I commented about the Mynah bird that was in a cage outside Collins' pet shop. I seem to recall they sold some fishing tackle as well.
Further down from those shops on the right was Blackburn's Photograph Studio. (Out of the photo)
There was also a shop selling women's corsetry along that stretch. Not sure of the name.
Maureen and others. I found the previous Frank Orrell photo on WW its #: 29535 from 2017. Irene this photo shows more of the street including the corset shop which was Norcliffe's.
Thanks Mo I remember buying 1d loaf's from there.
Veronica/Irene. Apologies I had a senior moment and mixed you up.
Wasn’t there a McCandlishes on Standishgate near to where C&A’s was? My favourite meat/potatoe pies.
