The sign for the Cross Keys Pub can be seen above the sign for Dennetts Eating House.

Phil, Yes the pub was in a yard behind the shops in CROSS KEYS YARD. My great grandmother was a DENNETT I wonder if there is a link??? Her father
who would be my great great grandfather,, started the Miners Union in Wigan The monument opposite the Crematorium, shaped like Cleopatra's needle, is commemorating him, but someone has stolen the plaque off it.

So the tall building on the left still stands on the corner of the Wiend with the Moon Under the Water and Cross Keys was behind .

The smaller shops are literally where the top of Library Street is now Peter. The taller building will be where the Moon Under Water pub is now.

The othe day I watched quite an interesting item on YouTube. ‘Wigan Market, final days’. Some other very interesting films relating to bygone Wigan.

It must have made a tremendous difference for shoppers when they demolished those smaller buildings ... fascinating. The same when Millgate was opened up as well. I suppose the Wiend would have been the main access to Millgate in days gone by.

Have a look in Places, Market Place, page 2, photo 19, No 4180 and page 4, photo 18 , No 23704 for a better look at what these shops looked like before Library Street was born.

The comment that I included ‘ Wigan Market, final days’. Should read ‘ Wigan Market Hall, final days’. Apologies.

It makes you wonder who had a camera in 1860.but aren't we grateful that they had the foresight to take photo like this.
