This photograph shows the back wall of the houses in the previous photograph of MARSH 'S YARD I had presumed that the houses in MARSH'S YARD were at the back of shops on Crompton street? However this photograph apparently shows that there were no shops on that stretch of Cromoton street?

Ron . Looking at the old maps in 1850 there were no roads between Millgate and Church street, it was all yards with terraced houses off Standishgate. By 1890 Crompton Street connected School Lane with Standishgate through a yard and alongside the back of the houses in Marshes Yard. This is what I think happened.

It appears that people built houses on any spare piece of land they could..
