Not to be to pessimistic but I looked forward to coming into town for a couple of pints before all this pandemic pandemonium but I wonder will my favourite pubs still be operating like the Tap and Barell, Raven and Swan and Railway. Sincerely hope so.

Remember that pub but never been inside. It was painted cream and maroon at the time if I remember.

Sorry to tell you but the 'TAP and BARELL' has closed and is up for sale.

The offices shown next to the pub , were they the offices of the brass foundry?. Was the foundry called the Pepper Mill?. When was this photograph taken?.

Albert, yes it was The Pepper Mill. A mate of mine worked there and said it was a terrible place to work in as it was always rat infested, probably coming from the river Douglas which ran behind it.

smoothing iron, george dawber had it mid sixties

Comment by: Broady on 22nd December 2020 at 15:18

Was it known as The Smoothing Iron?

Comment by: CJAlan on 22nd December 2020 at 15:44

I'd say this picture was taken in the 1980s with the mark one Fiesta and the old style Transit van.

I don't actually remember the pub myself - does anyone know when it closed?

I do remember the Old Pepper Mill site - it was lying derelict for quite a while before it was demolished.
