This is a photo of a pit on Liverpool road at Ashton Cross near Downall Green, that miners off the estate worked at upto 1960

Dougie, is it Stones' Garswood Colliery?

There was also a Pewfall Colliery close to Ashton Cross, but I am not familiar with its appearance.

Is that a Bedford 'O' type wagon under the loading screens?

Comment by: priscus on 6th May 2020 at 16:02

Yes, it is 'Park' (Stones)

It is illustration of New No.1 & No.2 headgear after refurbishment in 1950, I have located the same photo on this site: https://www.aditnow.co.uk/Photo/1950-Headgear_64752/

I can remember when a child living in Downallgreen every new years eve at midnight Stones pit used to welcome the new year in with its 'hooter' or siren.

A rare sight these days, there used to be at least one in every direction you travelled in the 50s.
