The Crown Hotel New Springs.
The buildings to the left of the Pub were, once upon a time a small Brewery. More recently they were the headquarters of the Scouts. Now they have been converted into two private houses.

Good photo DTease, every where looks nice and clean. There used to be a bus stop down near the two houses. If you could do an about face you will see a space at the corner of the street(can't remember the names) During the war a bomb hit that house and it was a pile of rubble for a long time. It has been a long time since I was there, so I don't know what is there now.

One of my friends lives close by and goes in the Crown maybe a couple of times a week. The pub is still doing well and not struggling like many other pubs in Wigan that have sadly closed.

Sadly I can't go past this way anymore as the 715 bus has been taken off. Very unfair for the people who live on Dicconson Lane who depended on it. I loved going through Scholes,Whelley and Aspull on my way home, it was Memory Lane for me every time ..... Good photo as always.

I can't guess the date when this photograph was taken, but the Renault Traffic van's registration is A719JLV, so August 1983 at the earliest. Rylands Mill chimney and Wigan Infirmary buildings can be seen, and also the hills near Ashurst Beacon between Upholland and Parbold.

Veronica, do the people on Diccoson Lane have no bus at all now?

used to know a guy who went in there called john hannah . anyone know him , he used to play darts for them & played pairs with jimmy marsh.

The Landlord Kent Winrow did an excellent job keeping the pub very popular with his patrons in the ten or so years he was there.

No I don't think so Dtease. I know a nurse I used to work with who lives near the Gerrard Arms who was dreading the bus being taken off and she was expecting it anytime. It's a long way for her to walk up to the shops near the finger Post and she can't get a bus to Middlebrook. Another couple who got on the bus as well the wife is quite disabled - it's disgraceful. I know quite a few from W/H who used the bus. The 715 from Bolton comes to W/H then turns round to go back to Bolton. But I believe it runs at weekend to Wigan!!!**** Idiocy! They do not care about older people and those who don't drive!

It’s so strange Veronica, they keep telling people to get rid of their cars and then they remove the only other means of transport that a lot of people have. Has the world gone totally bonkers!

Didn't realise the 715 service had been taken off. I was born in Whelley and it ran as route no. 15 as a joint service with Bolton Corporation from as long as I can remember, the Wigan terminus being in Station Rd.

I didnt realise how pleasant New Springs is !
If I ever return, here or Wigan Lane would be my destination.

I believe The Crown was the brewery and the smaller building was the pub called The Beehive.

The Beehive closed down along with the brewery (now The Crown) and was derelict before being occupied by Wigan Scouts.

The fishing club is still called Beehive.
