My grandad must have been on this photo, I have his long service Standish Works medal, along with his WW1 medals.
Ron, you’ve done it yet again. Maintaining the site as it should be, a permanent and fantastic record of Wigan’s past. One day when technology has evolved these photos will be brought to life and the people in them will “talk to us”, as they do already in their own unique way thanks to you.
Re above, that should read.... His long service Standish Works Fire Brigade medal.
Josh, thanks for your appreciative words. In my opinion photographs are for sharing and any I can find I will put on this web site for everyone to share.
A great photo, but can someone help me, I know it says works fire brigade, but was this a fore runner to the fire service we have today. Did they attend all fires or just those within there own works premises. There appears to be a good many firemen to be just for there own works etc.
There was a fire station on Ashfield Park Drive, near Ashfield House. Not sure if this is it.
This is the Standish Bleachworks.Directly behind the fire station is Chorley Road and behind the photographer is the River Douglas.
