From the website of the Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club (llsc.org.uk). Taken about 1958 by naturalist and ornithologist Tom Edmondson when he lived at Leigh. A hide at the flash is named after him, for his pioneering work in promoting interest in the area's wildlife. He died in February 2016, aged 93.
This shot was taken to record the effect on the flash, and its wildlife, of the increased tipping of pit waste from Bickershaw Colliery.
