Ron. There were also a number of linoleum stalls. I remember my dad walking home to Spring View, with a roll on his shoulder, as did many others.
I too remmebr the lino sellers and also toys for sale, furry monkeys and toy birds on a string fastened to a stick that you could whizz round to make it "fly".
was it Curly Jay who sold digital watches on the pit fair?
Does anyone remember a guy who used to demonstrate a potato peeler that you attached to your kitchen tap ?. It consisted of a type of scrubber thing that you held in your hand with a pipe to the tap and you peeled the potato by scrubbing it.
He used to give demonstrations outside the Market Hall. Don't think he sold many though.
I remember a similar device, a small enclosed bowl in which the abrasive base spun round via water pressure. A large assortment of vegetables could be peeled and washed at the same time. Probably be considered too wasteful of water these days.
Please help settle an argument. Does anyone know the name of the gentleman in the sports coat who is looking at the camera? I am convinced it is my dad, Ken Stevenson who was living in Hindley at the time this photo was taken, but the husband disagrees. Any help would be appreciated!
I will put a request on the "Memories of Hindley" Facebook asking people who may recognise the name to have a look at the photo and see what they think.
Irene that is so kind of you, I hope someone knows him!
Wigwann, I asked if someone from Hindley Memories could transfer the photo to the Facebook site as I thought people who weren't familiar with Wigan World Album wouldn't bother to look, (although I explained how to access it), and a gentleman called Tony has transferred it, so let's hope it brings a result. x.
Wigwann, two replies.....Chris Hull has put, "My sister Janice Cartwright and I agree that he looks similar to our Uncle Ken Stevenson who lived in Borsdane Avenue in the sixties but we don't believe it's him". Margaret Mort then added, "It's defo not Ken, Christine". So at least you know, Wigwann, and won't keep wondering. Hope this has helped. x.
Thanks Irene for your help, if he's not my Dad then maybe someone will 'own'him!
You're welcome, love, and they do say everyone has a double! x.
