These bridges were adapted and used as Air Raid shelters in the war Accessable via the School yard, As a child I recall going to school with my gas mask and practising entry to the shelters.Thankfully;never for real
I am curious AB as to how the bridges were adapted. I am visualising people huddled under them if they hear the droning of the bombers or the air raid sirens.... And yet open at both sides. I have never heard about bridges being used -unless it was instinct to go under them..
Have thought it out -it would be the earth mounds at the side of the walls! A tunnel would have been constructed....I think!
VB They were bricked up either side, the stone pillars forming the two ends and the railway deck was the roof
Thank you AB. Fortunately they weren't targeted then!!
I doubt they would have been a match for or of your ' bouncing ' bombs Veebs.
That would have been "a bridge too far" Oz !
