This pic, and others to follow, was loaned to me amongst material for an exhibition I've been asked to mount in St Wilfrid's on June 10th as part of the Church's 'Anniversary Weekend' to mark the Queen's 90th Birthday.
I'll be trying to merge local, national and Royal events over the past 90 years. Contributions welcome!
I forgot to mention - the 'home' address on the card is '16 Church Gates, Standish' - does anyone know where 'Church gates' was, exactly?
Rev. Long, could that be the official name for "Spite Row", or cottages between the peace gate and the Black Horse pub (Lychgate) - where the small car park is nowadays?
I've since been given a copy of a map of Market Place as it was before 'Spite Row' came down in 1930. The numbering of the houses is given - nos. 1 -6 was the row of shops and houses behind the photographer of this view - i.e. what is now part of Market Street, and numbered as such. Nos. 7 - 15 were 'Spite Row', and nos. 17 - 20 was the row opposite, ending in what was the Eagle and Child. No. 16 was therefore 'Church Gate House', which looks as if it was the building you can see to the right of the end of the Row. In 1881 one of the Curates for St Wilfrid's lived there, with his wife and a cook and a maidservant. The card may have been from one of those to a relative.
