The wooded area in the right foreground was a curling pond (in winter when it was frozen).

My Grandfather Born 1900 came from Top Loack New Springs. He used to swear he could remember curling matches on he Canal when it froze. I would love to know if this ever happened (as distinct from a "story" and he was quite a teller of tales) as presumably the canal would have had to have really frozen to quite a depth to bear the weight of people.

The only time in my lifetime I have seen the canal frozen enough to skate on was 1946/7 Even then it was taboo to go on.
