Is that the Welsh Presbyterian church, in Greenough Street, projecting slightly forward? If so this was attended by some of the Wigan Welsh Rugby League players before the second World War and lucky to escape the stray bomb that landed across the road on September 5th 1940 and destroyed the Methodist Church.

The car isn't an S type, I'd say it was a Mk X or 420G. My friend's dad had an S type, he used to give us 2 shillings each to clean it.
