Magnificent!
According to THE RAILTOUR FILES at SIX BELLS JUNCTION this train was THE SOUTH LANCASHIRE LIMITED RAILTOUR run on the 21st September 1963.It started at Manchester Liverpool Rd goods depot and terminated at Manchester Central,visiting Bolton Great Moor St,Wigan Central,Plank Lane,Amberswood.The Whelley Line via Haigh Junction to Adlington,Horwich Works,Hilton House,De Trafford,Lowton St Mary's,Haydock Park, Ashton in Makerfield,St Helens Central and Glazebrook.4 other locos were used-What a trip that would have been over lines most of which no longer exist.Owdbill
A splendid shot of Stanier 2-8-0 tapered boiler design 48718. The 9H shed code indicates that this was a Gorton engine, although its original home was 24B (1948) Rose Grove which in 1963 became 10F. Its withdrawal date from active service isn't known, but its condition here in 1963 suggests that it may well have been privately preserved. A very atmospheric photograph depicting the times and the slow decline of our local railway system. Dr Beeching had a lot to answer for.

There is a pic 'christmas Special' of a DMU crsossing the 'Dominoes' at Boars Head, on Railways. This was a rail tour in 1968. How did you manage to get their routes? There must have been a lot of reversing etc. And, a long journey?
