The Peace Gate on the right was dedicated in October 1926 - so the pic will be later than that.

Looked at the plaque set in the wall behind as I passed it tonight - it commemorates the demolition of the so-called 'Spite Row' of houses which stood along the line of the wall in 1930. I understand that the plaque was placed there following the death in 1937 of the benefactor who bought the houses and had them demolished, JM Ainscough - see the Comment to Ron's posting of a pic of the houses at:
http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=5&id=4169&gallery=Standish&offset=0

So the pic looks as if it's late 1930s.

Spite Row was demolished in 1930 so the photo is later than that too.

For `Standish Well Excavation, see:-
http://www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk/content/News_Letters/news019.htm
Extract:-
Over the last few years money has been donated to replace the well canopy that was destroyed by an American Army lorry in the 2nd World War. (The lorry was part of a convoy travelling from Chorley to Burton Wood when it got lost and took the wrong turning coming up Rectory Lane, ripping off the canopy roof.)
